When I first started looking for ways to earn money online, one thing that confused me was affiliate marketing vs network marketing.

People were recommending products.

People were earning commissions.

People were talking about building an income online.

So naturally, I assumed they were just different names for the same business model.

I was wrong.

While both models can generate income, they work very differently. Understanding the difference can save you a lot of confusion and help you choose a path that fits your goals.

In this article, we’ll look at affiliate marketing vs network marketing, how they differ, and which may be a better fit for beginners.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is one of the simplest online business models to understand.

You promote a product or service using a special referral link. When someone purchases through your link, you earn a commission.

That’s it.

You don’t recruit people.

You don’t build a team.

You simply recommend products and get paid when sales are made.

Examples include:

  • Products sold on Amazon
  • Products sold on Walmart’s website
  • Books
  • Online training programs
  • Health products
  • Home and lifestyle products

The product itself doesn’t matter nearly as much as the process. You recommend something you believe may help someone, and if they buy through your referral link, you earn a commission.

In affiliate marketing, your main job is usually very simple:

  • Find a product you would like to promote
  • Join the affiliate program
  • Get your referral link
  • Put that link where people can see it
  • Earn a commission when someone buys

For example, imagine Amazon pays you a commission for recommending a product.

You receive a special link that identifies you as the person who made the sale.

Now you need people to see that link.

You might share it on a website, a blog, social media, YouTube, or anywhere else that allows affiliate promotions.

No matter what product you choose to promote, people have to see your offer before anyone can buy it.

What Is Network Marketing?

Network marketing also involves promoting products or services.

The biggest difference is that some companies allow you to earn money in more than one way.

Just like affiliate marketing, you can earn commissions when people buy products.

However, some network marketing companies also allow you to introduce other people to the business opportunity.

For example, think of a health and wellness company that sells vitamins and health products.

You can earn commissions when customers purchase the products.

And if someone likes the products and decides they would like to share them with others as well, the company may also reward you for helping them get started.

This is one of the biggest differences between affiliate marketing and network marketing.

With affiliate marketing, you’re usually paid for sales you make.

For this reason, network marketing is often more focused on helping people, building relationships, and working as a team.

Not every company works the same way, but having customers and helping others succeed is usually an important part of the business and often the quickest path to income and growth.

Affiliate Marketing vs Network Marketing: What Is The Biggest Difference?

When I first started looking into different ways to make money online, I thought affiliate marketing and network marketing were basically the same thing.

The truth is they have one major difference.

Affiliate marketing is usually focused on making sales.

You promote a product, someone buys through your link, and you earn a commission.

Network marketing can include product sales as well, but many companies also allow people to build a team of promoters who are sharing the products and business opportunity with others.

As those people make product sales and build their own customer base, you may be able to earn commissions from their efforts as well. In some companies, compensation can even extend through multiple levels of people introduced into the business.

Not every company works the same way, and compensation plans can vary significantly, but the ability to earn from both personal sales and team activity is one of the features that makes network marketing different from traditional affiliate marketing.

Which One Is Easier For Beginners?

This is one of the most common questions people ask.

The honest answer is that both can work for beginners, but both require learning new skills.

No matter which path you choose, the bottom line is that you need traffic — and lots of it.

People have to see your offer many times before they can buy a product, join a business, or even know you exist.

That’s true whether you’re promoting affiliate products, network marketing opportunities, your own website, or almost anything.

Think about it. If a new store opens up or you see a commercial on TV about a product or service, chances are you’ll drive past it or see that commercial at least 6 or 7 times before you decide to stop by the store or try what you saw on TV, assuming it appealed to you in the first place.

If you choose network marketing, there’s also another factor to consider.

You should be prepared to answer questions and support people who decide to get involved with the business.

Some people enjoy that part because they like helping others succeed.

Others prefer focusing mainly on promoting products and generating sales.

Many beginners spend a lot of time trying to decide which business model is best.

In my experience, learning how to generate traffic and get your offers in front of the right people is often the bigger challenge.

No matter which path you choose, people have to know your offer exists before they can take the next step.

That’s why I believe learning basic marketing and traffic generation skills is one of the most important things you can do, regardless of whether you choose affiliate marketing, network marketing, or both.

Can You Do Both?

Absolutely.

In fact, many people do.

There is no rule that says you must choose one or the other.

Some people promote affiliate products while also participating in a network marketing company.

Others focus entirely on one model.

The important thing is understanding how each works and choosing a path that fits your goals, personality, and the amount of time you’re willing to invest.

My Personal Thoughts

When I first started, just like most people, I put the cart before the horse.

I was focused on making money and seeing dollar signs.

Looking back, that wasn’t the right way to approach earning online. If money is the only thing you’re thinking about, it’s easy to overlook the skills and knowledge needed to actually get results.

What eventually became clear to me was that it matters very little whether you choose affiliate marketing, network marketing, or something else entirely if nobody ever sees your offer.

People have to know you exist before they can buy a product, join a program, or take any kind of action.

That’s why traffic is one of the most important skills you can learn.

You could have the best thing since sliced bread, but if nobody knows about it, what good is it to you or them?

Once I finally understood that, everything else started to make more sense.

I still had plenty to learn, and I’m still learning today, but understanding the importance of traffic was one of the biggest hurdles I had to overcome.

Get that part right first, and everything else becomes much easier to understand and build upon.

If you’re still trying to figure out where to begin, don’t worry about choosing the perfect business model right away.

Whether you decide to explore affiliate marketing, network marketing, or something else entirely, the most important thing is understanding the basic process that helps people discover your offer in the first place.
